Heat Treatment Salts

The agents used for salt bath heat treatment are generally called “salts”. When actual salts and other necessary composition materials are heated continuously, they become liquid. Heat treatment using this heat media is called salt bath heat treatment. Salt bath heat treatment is a practice with a long history, used to effectively bring out specific characteristic in metal materials. Metal heat treatment is applied to automobile, electrical appliance, office appliance, precision machine, aircraft, and atomic energy tools and components. In addition, due to the diverse properties of salts, they are widely utilized as heat exchange media, and chemical reaction media, as well as in optical glass reactions, fuel cells, new energy related materials, and more. Parker Netsushori Kogyo is Japan’s main manufacturer of heat treatment salts, meeting the needs of customers with with technology and development capabilities it has cultivated over the years.

Product Lineup

Salts are provided in the form of powder or solid which are melted by heating up in the heating cell of salt bath and then used for various applications. Salts are line up to many kinds of salts according to the temperatures applied. The range of temperature extends to 160 – 1300°C.

For heating-up and for isothermal cooling in case of meal heat treatment of steel.

(As the case may be, an addition of stop-off paint for decarburizing is needed) Typical products are listed below.

  • Middle Temperature Range

To be used for heating bath up to 1100°C without decarburizing, carburizing and oxidizing of high alloy steel.

    GS540/R2 A 5% addition of stop-off paint R2 is generally aimed.
    (Temperature used: 600 – 900°C)
    GS750/R2 (Temperature used: 850 – 1100°C)

Besides, a series of H-9 to -10 is available.

  • High Temperature Range

To be mainly used for hardening of high-speed and die steel in the temperature range of 980- 1350°C

    HS950 (Temperature used: 1100 – 1300°C)
    HS1100 (Temperature used: 1100 – 1350°C)
    PARKERNEUTRAL (Temperature used: 950 – 1350°C)

Besides, a series of H-11 to -13 is available.

  • Quenching, Tempering and Isothermal Cooling Salts

These are the salts especially well assorted and generally used for quenching, tempering and high temperature tempering of steel, but in addition, there are the fields of application widening the range of use; AS-series and T-series of nitrate salts (160 – 550°C), which are primarily used for tempering, are now used for salt quenching after gas carburizing and austempering of thin plate spring and case iron, etc. Safety by reason of incombustibles as the physical properties of salts under isothermal cooling in the temperature range above the ignition point of quenching oil, as well as a simple cleaning by reason of its water solubility characterize the salts.

GS430 For the tempering at high temperature of high-speed, heat resisting steel and die steel.
    (Temperature used: 480 – 700°C)
GS230 For the tempering of high-speed steel, heat resisting steel and die steel.
    (Temperature used: 250 – 700°C)
    AS140

Metal Surface Treating(Nitrocarburizing, carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding)

  • ISONITE Salts

NS-2 Nitrocarburizing salts applicable to all kinds of ferrous metals and also to the nitrocarburizing materials such as austenitic stainless steel, etc. which are difficult to be treated by gas nitrocarburizing process. It is applicable to nitriding as well.
    (Temperature used: 570°C)
TF-1 Nitrocarburizing process using innoxious cyanate as the main ingredient. The derivative technology by warm bath quenching such as SQ, SQP, QPQ processes gives, on top of proper efficiency of ISONITE, corrosion resistance which is more than that of hard chrome plating and assumes a black color. (Temperature used: 580°C)

Moreover, ISONITE LS process has been developed which makes low temperature treatment possible.

  • Carbonitriding Salts

C-1 With thin case depth of less than 0.1mm and very high hardness, it is used for small or thin workpieces. (Tempering used: 650 – 850°C)
